O God, save me by your name, and vindicate me by your might.
2 O God, hear my prayer; give ear to the words of my mouth. 3 For strangers have risen against me; ruthless men seek my life; they do not set God before themselves. Selah 4 Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life. 5 He will return the evil to my enemies; in your faithfulness put an end to them. 6 With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you; I will give thanks to your name, O Lord, for it is good. 7 For he has delivered me from every trouble, and my eye has looked in triumph on my enemies. Meditation Do you know someone who does not like to read instructions because they think they can figure things out on their own? Sometimes seeking help is difficult because we are afraid to be vulnerable, appear weak, we want to be independent, or we struggle to trust. God reveals Himself as a helper of His people and today’s Psalm invites the worshipper to explore a deeper trust in the Lord by looking to Him alone for help. Wilderness years are difficult and David’s were no exception. Psalm 54 is birthed from double rejection-David from his own tribe (1 Samuel 23:19-24) and David fleeing King Saul for his life. David is specific in his plea for help: “Save me… vindicate me… hear my prayer!” (1-2) David’s desperation drove him to seek help from God. David’s circumstances were desperate but God’s character is unchanging- God is the helper to His people, upholding life (4). David’s trust frees him from seeking an end of his enemies (5) and frees him for sacrifice of thanksgiving (6). David’s trust is deep enough to speak of the help he asks for in past tense (7). God’s help is so sure that the future grace we hope for becomes present strength today. God helps those who have no helper (Job 29:12; Psalm 10:14). God is where our help comes from (Psalm 121). God wants to help you and His help is so sure you can begin to thank Him for His help before you see it. God’s future grace forms our present perspective- This is amazing love! Richly Dwelling -Do you have trouble asking for help? Why? -Do you trust God’s love enough to respond to His invitation to look to Him for help? He is our helper! -What specific areas do you need help in? Ask God to specifically help you in these areas. Make a note of them and return to the note- you WILL see how God helps you. Key Verse 4 Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life. Comments are closed.
