O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. 2 So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. 3 Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. 4 So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands. 5 My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips, 6 when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night; 7 for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy. 8 My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me. 9 But those who seek to destroy my life shall go down into the depths of the earth; 10 they shall be given over to the power of the sword; they shall be a portion for jackals. 11 But the king shall rejoice in God; all who swear by him shall exult, for the mouths of liars will be stopped. Meditation David wakes up in the wilderness on the run for his life with a dysfunctional family dividing his kingdom. David understood his desires reflected deeper realities. The historical context of Psalm 63 is 2 Samuel 15:13-37. The words of the Psalm invite us into a deep dive for our soul. God is the deeper desire (1-4): Circumstances reveal the thirst of our soul for God. Our flesh faints for God alone and our lips long to praise Him. To Him alone will we lift up our hands, surrendering to the satisfaction He alone offers. God is the deeper delight (5-8): Our soul finds satisfaction in the Lord alone, remembering Him in our rest and meditating on His promises during life. We have refuge in the shadow of His wings and by His presence and promises we can sing for joy in the storms of life. God is our deeper defense (9-11): In the wilderness of life we trust God to be our deepest defense. All who trust in the Lord for defense will celebrate victory! The deeper desires and delights of our souls are found in Christ alone. With faith in Christ we wake up in the wilderness, facing difficulties and dysfunctions of a fallen world, with recognition that our circumstances are a doorway to go deeper in our desire and delight of Christ. His sovereign grace is our defense, freeing us to seek Him and thirst for Him alone. Richly Dwelling -How do your current circumstances drive you to go deeper in Christ? -Where can you deepen your delight in Christ through the doorways of His grace? -God’s sovereign grace in Christ is our greatest defense. Do you trust Him enough to be at peace, freeing you to truly seek Him?
