Behold, how good and pleasant it is
when brothers dwell together in unity! 2 It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! 3 It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore. Meditation God’s blessings are like rain, drenching heads and hearts before flooding streets and cities. The forming flood from the deluge of God’s blessings will one day cover the earth as the waters cover the sea (Habakkuk 2:14). Today, God’s blessings are available through the Living Water, Jesus Christ. Unity is the focus of blessing in today’s Psalm (1). “Together” is God’s ideal for His family. Believers are united by God’s work, God’s word, God’s will, and God’s ways. Jesus prayed for the Church to know the blessing of unity, to be one in name, truth, purpose, and love (John 17). Blessing flows when God’s people dwell together in unity. The flood of blessing flows down from the head and heart to all of life. The imagery of anointing a priest (2) and the dew of the largest mountain in Israel (3) emphasize this reality. The oil runs down the head and body, more of a monsoon than anointing! The dew falls on the mountains of Israel before flowing into the valleys to give life. The blessing of unity trickles down over all creation. The New Testament admonishes Christians to discover the blessings of unity offered through Jesus Christ. Believers find blessing in unity of mind (1 Corinthians 1:10), heart (Acts 4:32), status (Galatians 3:28), love (Colossians 3:14), and practice (Philippians 2:3-4). The design for God’s people to be one will lead to a deluge of God’s blessings that will flood hearts and homes when we obey. Lord, please make us one in You! Richly Dwelling -How would you grade the unity of God’s people, on a scale of 1-10? What are we allowing to divide us? Where are we missing God’s blessings? -How can you embrace God’s design for unity, from faith in Christ to following His command to be one? Be specific. -How does God’s grace in Christ, that we are re-united to Him through the sacrificial work of Jesus, inspire you to seek unity and not count the cost?
