Key Verse
6    Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Meditation
Jesus is our Good Shepherd who secures the eternal promises of God by giving Himself for His enemies so believers can be welcomed into God’s family forever. Psalm 23 invites believers to rest in the eternal covenant faithfulness of God.

Three images drive this Psalm: Pasture, Banquet, and Temple.
In the pasture, the Shepherd gives confidence: “I shall not want” (v. 1). The world disciples hearts toward fear and scarcity, but Jesus leads His people beside still waters and restores weary souls. Christians must trust the Shepherd to provide, guide, protect, and restore because His promises are anchored in His eternal character.

The banquet reveals the overflowing care and covenant rule of our King. Green pastures become a prepared table. Quiet waters become overflowing cups. Protection in the valley becomes peace in the presence of enemies. Jesus is both Shepherd and Host, welcoming sinners to His table through His own broken body and shed blood. The Shepherd gave Himself to His enemies so His enemies could become family.

The Temple climaxes this song of trust with eternal hope: “I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (v. 6). God’s goodness and steadfast love pursue us all the days of our lives. The goal of salvation is eternal communion with God Himself.

Jesus is the fullness of every image. He is the Good Shepherd who leads us, the Host who welcomes us, and the true Temple where God dwells with His people forever. His grace invites weary hearts to rest, repentant sinners to feast, and wandering sheep to come home.

Today’s Reading
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2        He makes me lie down in green pastures.
       He leads me beside still waters.
3        He restores my soul.
       He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
4    Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
       for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5    You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
       you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6    Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
       and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
