O God, save me by your name, and vindicate me by your might.
2 O God, hear my prayer; give ear to the words of my mouth. 3 For strangers have risen against me; ruthless men seek my life; they do not set God before themselves. Selah 4 Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life. 5 He will return the evil to my enemies; in your faithfulness put an end to them. 6 With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you; I will give thanks to your name, O Lord, for it is good. 7 For he has delivered me from every trouble, and my eye has looked in triumph on my enemies. Meditation The Lord is our helper, a “protective presence” for people whose hope is in Him. In Christ Jesus, God will never leave or forsake us! The difficulty of David’s wilderness years fueled doxology from David’s life because his dependency was on the Lord. Psalm 54 was birthed from double rejection David experienced when a group from his own tribe helped king Saul capture his life (1 Samuel 23:19-24). The people’s political maneuvering and Saul’s military strategies were no match for the Lord’s help! “Your name,” referring to the Lord, frames this wilderness worship (1, 6)- bread on the sandwich serving up the meat in the middle: “Behold, God is my helper! The Lord is the upholder of my life.” (4) David petitions for salvation, vindication, and protection (1-2) as he laments the civil aggression, running for his life from fellow Israelites turned enemies. (3) The emphasis is on the name of the Lord and His help for those who cry out to Him. David’s circumstances turned desperate but God’s character is unchanging- David’s trust freed him from seeking to end his enemies (5) and freed him for a sacrifice of thanksgiving (6). David’s worship is direction for believers when our life makes no sense- orienting our heart around one true hope- God alone who is our helper! The work of Jesus guarantees covenant promises, especially His helping presence. Jesus gives His disciples the Helper in the Holy Spirit, (John 15:26) the power of God’s presence that will always remain, especially through the problems and pain of following Jesus in a fallen world. Richly Dwelling -What stands out to you from today’s reading, especially the orientation around the Lord as our helper? -Do you trust God’s covenant love enough to respond to His invitation to look to Him for help? -What specific areas do you need help in? Ask God to specifically help you in these areas. Make a note of them and return to the note- you WILL see how God helps you. Key Verse 4 Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life.
