Psalm 82: Tomorrow’s News, Today!

Key Verse
8 Arise, O God, judge the earth; for you shall inherit all the nations!

Meditation
Do you pray like God is faithful and will keep His promises, making tomorrow’s headlines different from today's realities? Let’s consider this from another angle: Would your investments change if you knew how the stock market would act, your plans change if you knew the weather, or your demeanor change if you knew when the next cultural crisis will come?

The faithfulness of God invites Christian formation through knowing tomorrow’s headlines, today. Wicked rulers will be overthrown, injustice undone, and rescue for the righteous will come.

The key verse of today’s psalm implores the Lord to rise from His judge’s bench to execute His verdict (v. 8)! The incentive is that all nations belong to God already.

Judgement is good news for God’s people but horrible news for unjust leaders, unrighteous people, and those who walk in wickedness. God has taken His place among the leaders, or gods, of the earth (vv. 1, 6. Jesus uses v. 1 in John 10:34 to highlight the representative role of leaders. Leaders appointed by God (Romans 13:1) will be held accountable by God, the just judge of all the earth (Genesis 18:25)). In this council, the verdict is declared: the long rule of injustice will end. The wicked will not have partiality, the fatherless will have justice, the afflicted rescued, the needy will have provision (vv. 2-5).

Praying for the Lord to judge the earth (v. 8) is putting the headline of God’s promise to overthrow the powers of the world as priority in our hearts. God’s faithfulness will prevail! God’s people must live in tomorrow’s victory, today.

Today’s Reading
God has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods he holds judgment: 2 “How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? Selah

3 Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. 4 Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”

5 They have neither knowledge nor understanding, they walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken. 6 I said, “You are gods, sons of the Most High, all of you; 7 nevertheless, like men you shall die, and fall like any prince.”

8 Arise, O God, judge the earth; for you shall inherit all the nations!

Richly Dwelling
-What stands out to you from today’s reading?

-God’s judgment is good news for Christians and bad news for those who don’t know Jesus as Savior. Have you been made right with God through Christ’s work on the cross? Do you know someone who has not? Does tomorrow’s good news give you urgency today for a friend, family member, co-worker, or neighbor? Will you share the salvation we have in Christ alone?

-The Psalmist grabs hope from tomorrow’s good news through prayer. Take time to pray for God’s headlines for tomorrow to be true today, and watch how trust in God’s faithfulness to execute His promises tomorrow will form your faithfulness today.
