Romans 16: The Relational Reality of Gospel Mission

Meditation
The most influential letter in history is carried along by ordinary people whose relationships were shaped by the gospel’s promises and purposes. Romans is a theological masterpiece as well as a deeply personal letter, rooted in a real community of saints, servants, and fellow laborers. Today’s readers should not miss the relational network behind Paul’s writing and mission.
 
Paul’s long list of names reveals a gospel-formed fellowship marked by shared life and shared mission. The repeated language of “fellow workers” (vv. 3, 9) and “fellow prisoners” (v. 7) reflects the reality of koinonia, partnership for Christ flowing from identity in Christ. The church in Rome included Jews and Gentiles, men and women, people of influence and people otherwise unnoticed by the world. The gospel made them one.
 
Notably, Paul highlights several women who labored faithfully for the church. Phoebe is commended as a servant and likely carried this very letter to Rome (vv. 1-2). Alongside others, she stands as evidence that gospel ministry has always depended on women who work hard and serve boldly. Paul’s inclusion of women was revolutionary in his day and should be informative for the church today.
 
Paul closes with both warning and hope. The church must watch for those who divide and deceive (vv. 17-18), but believers need not fear. The God of peace promises victory: “He will soon crush Satan under your feet” (v. 20). This gospel power fuels God’s global purpose, that all nations would come to “the obedience of faith” (v. 26).
 
The gospel creates a new people, anchored in God’s promises, united in Christ, and empowered for God’s mission.

All the churches of Christ greet you.

Final Instructions and Greetings
17 I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. 18 For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive. 19 For your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil. 20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
21 Timothy, my fellow worker, greets you; so do Lucius and Jason and Sosipater, my kinsmen.
22 I Tertius, who wrote this letter, greet you in the Lord.
23 Gaius, who is host to me and to the whole church, greets you. Erastus, the city treasurer, and our brother Quartus, greet you.
